Abstract.This article offers an account of the first three hours of training to be a counsellor. The frame of reference that has informed the ethnographic description concerns two main points. First, the phenomena that I am interested in are the taken for granted, obvious, matters of routine fact that everyone involved in the counsellor training can see. Second, the theme used to link the features of the first three hours that I describe is the treatment of the counselling training as an institutionalised nexus of social practices. Following this approach, I draw conclusions not just of counselling training, but also of counselling and psychotherapy itself.
